《加密货币入门：原理与入门指南》

Cryptocurrency is a digital asset you can hold as an investment or use to pay someone. Many networks track these transactions through a blockchain, a shared ledger. Find out what you’re buying and what it costs before committing your money. You’ll also need to decide who controls access to what you buy.

Your tax result depends on what you do with cryptocurrency. Buying with U.S. dollars and holding generally doesn’t create a taxable sale. A coin swap can trigger a gain or loss calculation for tax purposes without any cash changing hands. This guide explains how to assess a purchase, choose storage, and save transaction details you may need for your return. It’s educational, not a recommendation to buy or invest.

简要回答和关键要点

Cryptocurrency is a digital asset you can send over a network, using a wallet to manage access. Before buying, find out what the asset does and which platform you’ll use. Total fees and control over your holdings also matter. Your records should show what you paid and received, in dollars, so you can calculate gains or losses later.

  • Asset types differ; don’t assume every token works like Bitcoin.
  • An exchange lets you trade. A wallet manages access.
  • Falling prices aren’t the only risk; losing access can cost you funds.
  • Check where you’re sending. Transfers can be hard to reverse.
  • Buying cryptocurrency with dollars and holding generally isn’t taxable. Sales and swaps can be.

什么是加密货币？

Cryptocurrency is a digital asset people hold as an investment or send to others, including sellers accepting payments. Cryptography uses mathematical methods to help protect these transactions and control access to assets. There’s no physical coin to hold. Many networks record activity on a distributed ledger, a transaction record shared across computers.

The details differ from one asset to another. Some people hold crypto as an investment or trade it hoping its price will rise. For federal income tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets as property. That means paying with crypto can require calculating a gain or loss.

Crypto assets aren’t bank deposits and don’t qualify for FDIC deposit insurance. An exchange’s relationship with a bank doesn’t extend that protection to your coins. Check whether an account holds a covered dollar deposit or digital assets before assuming that federal deposit insurance protects the entire balance.

How does cryptocurrency work?

Cryptocurrency moves through transactions that a network checks and records. A wallet lets you authorize those transactions using private keys, secret credentials that control access to your assets. The coins don’t sit inside the wallet. Don’t give anyone your private keys.

  1. Choose how much to send, then supply the recipient’s public address as destination.
  2. Approve the transaction. Your wallet uses a private key to sign it.
  3. Network computers receive the signed instruction and check it against their rules.
  4. A valid transaction can join a block, adding it to the network’s record.

What is blockchain technology?

A blockchain groups transactions into linked blocks. Computers share this ledger rather than relying on one copy. For your return, retain dollar amounts and fees with each transaction ID.

What's the difference between mining and staking?

Mining, or proof-of-work, uses computing work to compete for block production. With proof-of-stake, validators commit assets to help secure the network.

Ethereum’s Merge replaced Ethereum’s mining system with proof-of-stake in 2022.

What are the main types of cryptocurrency and how are they used?

An asset’s purpose matters: people may buy Bitcoin to invest or make payments, but they need Ether to pay for transactions on the Ethereum network. The examples below aren’t recommendations to buy.

类型 示例 Common use or distinguishing feature
Payment and investment asset Bitcoin (BTC) Users transfer value or pay sellers who accept the asset.
Ethereum’s network asset Ether (ETH) Covers fees for Ethereum transactions and blockchain applications.
Stablecoin USDC Targets a value of one U.S. dollar for payments and transfers. That target isn’t guaranteed.
Other network or application tokens Project-specific tokens May provide access to services or pay fees; check the project’s rules.

A stable price target doesn’t make a sale or swap tax-free. You may still need to calculate a gain or loss.

Why does crypto have value?

Supply and demand determine the price, but demand isn’t limited to current uses. Buyers may expect wider adoption or simply speculate that someone else will pay more for it. FTC consumer guidance explains how sharply values can change. Holding a token doesn’t guarantee dollar redemption.

What should you know before your first crypto purchase?

Before you spend money on cryptocurrency:

  • How would you use the asset? Separate investing from paying or transferring. Buying with dollars and holding generally doesn’t create a taxable sale.
  • Could you afford to lose the money? The SEC investor alert describes speculative investments where sharp price drops can cause losses.
  • Identify what you’re buying and from whom. Read the platform’s withdrawal limits and account restrictions before you pay anything.
  • What’s the full cost? Fees and the spread between buy and sell prices affect your cost.
  • Are you buying coins or an investment product? An exchange-traded product tracking Bitcoin or Ether doesn’t give you direct control of coins. See crypto ETP guidance.

Nobody can reliably predict short-term prices, so there’s no dependable “best time” to buy.

How do beginners get started with cryptocurrency?

You’ll need original purchase details to calculate a gain or loss if you later sell or swap. Confirm you can withdraw what you buy and that the asset works for your planned payment or investment.

Step 1. Decide what the purchase is for.

Your reason for buying cryptocurrency affects what you choose. You might need to pay someone or transfer value, rather than invest. Trading repeatedly means keeping track of more purchases and sales.

Step 2. Research the asset and platform.

Before opening an account, read what the asset does and confirm the platform’s identity. Its terms should tell you the account requirements and withdrawal rules. Locate the fee information and an official support contact before you send money or need help with access.

Step 3. Protect the account before funding it.

The account’s password should be strong and unique, with supported multifactor authentication requiring an extra check at login. Don’t share your login codes or the private keys and recovery phrases that control your wallet’s access. The SEC custody checklist explains these security practices.

Step 4. Review the order and destination.

Look at what you’ll receive for the total amount charged, including the spread, commission, and fees. Confirm the asset and network on the order. The price can drop after buying. You can’t count on recovering misdirected funds; verify the address before sending.

Step 5. Save the transaction details.

Keep the purchase confirmation with the transaction date, quantity, dollar value, fees, transaction ID, and source account. You’ll need what you paid to calculate a gain or loss on a later sale or swap. The amount you receive from selling isn’t automatically profit.

Where should you store cryptocurrency?

You can let a provider manage access or manage the keys yourself. A crypto wallet generally manages those keys; it doesn’t hold physical coins.

Who controls your private keys?

Choosing custody means deciding whether you’ll manage the keys yourself or trust a provider with control of your access. Hot and cold describe whether keys stay online or offline. A custodian can use either, or both, as SEC custody basics 解释道。.

问题 选项 What to consider
Who controls access? Custodial You depend on the provider’s handling of keys and account access.
Who controls access? Self-custody You must protect your keys and recovery phrase.
How are keys stored? Hot Online access is convenient but exposes keys to online threats.
How are keys stored? Cold Offline storage reduces online exposure; devices can still be lost or damaged.

A recovery or seed phrase can restore wallet access. Losing it or giving it to a scammer may mean permanent loss. Neither storage type removes every risk. Keep purchase records when moving coins; transferring between wallets you own generally doesn’t reset what you paid for them.

What risks should cryptocurrency beginners understand?

You can lose money through falling prices, theft, a failed exchange, or a transfer you can’t undo. A blockchain’s security features don’t make every platform or transaction safe.

  • Price losses: An asset can drop sharply. Don’t treat a promised return as evidence that your money is safe.
  • Scams: Impersonators may direct you to a fake website or request payment. Verify official domains yourself and reject guaranteed profits.
  • Lost access: An exchange may fail or restrict withdrawals. Stolen keys or lost recovery phrases can also block access; protect them and enable supported multifactor authentication.
  • Transfer errors: Check the address and network before sending. A completed payment may be impossible to reverse.

"(《世界人权宣言》) FTC crypto scam warnings explain impersonation tactics and why recovering a payment can be difficult.

For your tax records, separate a price decline while holding from a sale that may produce a capital loss. A lower account balance alone doesn’t mean you’ve sold the asset at a loss.

When does cryptocurrency affect your taxes?

Buying and holding cryptocurrency differs from selling it or receiving it as income. IRS digital asset rules apply property treatment for federal income tax purposes.

Activity General U.S. federal tax treatment
Buy with dollars and hold Generally no taxable disposition.
Sell for dollars Possible capital gain or loss if held as a capital asset.
Swap for another coin Disposal requiring a gain or loss calculation.
Spend on purchases Disposal that may create a gain or loss.
Receive payment for services Generally ordinary income at its dollar market value when received.
Transfer between your own wallets Generally nontaxable, except assets used or withheld to pay transfer services.

参见 IRS transaction FAQs for these distinctions.

For a coin held as a capital asset, a $140 sale minus $100 purchase price gives $40 before fees and basis adjustments. A swap can require calculating gain or loss without receiving dollars.

Adjusted cost basis means your acquisition cost after applicable adjustments; amount realized means the value received after applicable selling costs. Proceeds aren’t profit.

What do Form 1099-DA and Form 8949 report?

Brokers report covered 2025 transaction gross proceeds on Form 1099-DA issued in 2026. Certain 2026 transactions also require basis reporting in 2027. See IRS Form 1099-DA guidance for reporting details. Missing basis requires checking purchase histories and transfers between platforms.

Form 8949 lists capital transactions for Schedule D. You may skip it for eligible transactions with basis reported by brokers to the IRS and no needed adjustments, following 国税局 8949 表格说明.

Check exchange statements against your records; see Coinbase tax reporting requirements.

What cryptocurrency records should you keep?

Keep records connecting each purchase, receipt, transfer, and sale to the units involved. Save:

  • Transaction date and time, asset name, and quantity.
  • Value in U.S. dollars at transaction time.
  • Acquisition price and fees; sale proceeds and selling fees.
  • Source and destination accounts, plus the wallet transaction ID.
  • Income or reward details and broker statements.

Your records must support the amounts on your return; 美国国税局（IRS）的记录保存指南 explains what to retain.

If you buy on Platform A and move the coins to Platform B, the transfer-date market value doesn’t automatically become your tax basis. Keep the acquisition record and evidence that both accounts belonged to you.

Missing cost basis on Form 1099-DA calls for matching purchase and transfer records, not assuming zero basis or treating all proceeds as profit. For sales and reporting adjustments, see How IRS Form 8949 works.

The federal return asks about digital asset activity. Use your transaction history to answer the IRS digital asset question; merely buying with dollars and holding differs from selling or swapping.

What should you do if a cryptocurrency transaction goes wrong?

Your withdrawal record and the network’s transaction status can help explain why funds haven’t reached the receiving wallet.

  1. Check the asset and network shown on the withdrawal record.
  2. Match the receiving address against the wallet address you meant to use.
  3. Search the transaction ID in an explorer for that network. Pending doesn’t mean confirmed, and processing times vary with network conditions.
  4. For a transfer controlled by a platform, use independently verified official support channels.
  5. Preserve screenshots, messages, and transaction IDs. Keep them with the related purchase and transfer records for tax preparation.

Report suspected fraud and avoid anyone promising guaranteed recovery. See FTC scam guidance. Confirmed transfers generally can’t be reversed. Contacting support may help explain what happened, but neither a support request nor a fraud report guarantees you’ll get your money back.

常见问题

Before choosing cryptocurrency, understand its purpose and what you could lose. You’ll also need to know the fees and how easily it sells. A low purchase price alone doesn’t tell you whether it’s suitable.

Public transactions don’t automatically identify every wallet owner. Brokers or lawful access to information may connect activity to a person. Public transactions sometimes reveal wallet owners’ identities, as FTC blockchain privacy guidance 解释道。.

Cryptocurrency trading means buying, selling, or exchanging coins repeatedly. Unlike simply holding, trading can produce taxable sales and swaps. You’ll need purchase records for those transactions to calculate how much you gained or lost on each.

Yes. You can buy a fraction of a Bitcoin instead of a whole coin. Fees still affect what you pay, and buying a smaller amount doesn’t remove the risk that its price will fall.

Before you make your first cryptocurrency transaction

Before placing an order, check that you can:

  • Understand the asset’s purpose and how you could lose money.
  • See what you’ll pay, including the platform’s fees.
  • Choose where to hold it and protect your access credentials.
  • Save the purchase date, units, dollar value, and fees.

Learning the basics may be enough to handle a first purchase. Tax reporting needs a closer look if you use multiple exchanges, can’t find what you paid, receive crypto as income, or aren’t sure how to report sales and swaps.
