Advance payments of the Premium Tax Credit lower what you pay each month for Marketplace health insurance. The Marketplace bases those payments on estimated income and household information. Under the Premium Tax Credit rules, your final credit depends on the details you report on your tax return, so the help you received during the year may differ from what you qualify for.
Form 8962 calculates that difference. You may claim an additional credit or have to repay excess advance payments, depending on your circumstances and the tax year’s rules. Before you start, get your Form 1095-A. It shows the coverage amounts and advance payments you’ll need for the calculation.
Respuesta rápida: Use Form 8962 to work out your Premium Tax Credit and compare it with advance payments sent to your insurer. That comparison is called reconciliation. You generally have to file if those payments covered anyone in your tax family, even if you won’t claim more credit on the return. The IRS filing instructions explain this requirement.

You generally must attach Form 8962 to your federal return if the Marketplace paid advance credit payments for you, your spouse on a joint return, or a dependent you claim. That requirement applies even if the calculation leaves you with no additional credit. Reconciling payments you’ve already received is separate from qualifying for a credit under the IRS eligibility and filing rules.
If advance credit payments require you to reconcile, you must file a federal return with the form even when your income is otherwise too low to require a return.
Filing may also be necessary when:
If you had coverage without savings, received no advance payments, and aren’t claiming the credit, receiving Form 1095-A alone doesn’t require this attachment.
Your household income and filing status affect eligibility. You also can’t claim the credit if another taxpayer can claim you as a dependent. Access to qualifying employer coverage or certain government coverage can also affect whether you’re entitled to the credit.
Download the blank IRS form and instructions from the official form page. To find your Form 1095-A, sign into your Marketplace account for the coverage year you’re reporting. If you used a state Marketplace, follow that exchange’s instructions.
Como tú prepare your tax records, gather every applicable coverage statement. Use a corrected statement instead of the version it replaces, and don’t use voided forms. If you received several statements for different policies or coverage periods, review all of them.
Start with Part III on your Form 1095-A when entering insurance amounts in Form 8962, Part II. The 2025 form uses these destinations:
| Form 1095-A field | Amount shown | Part II destination |
|---|---|---|
| Column A | Enrollment premiums | Columna (a) |
| Column B | Second-lowest-cost Silver plan premium | Columna (b) |
| Column C | Advance credit payments | Columna (f) |
El Marketplace reconciliation guide explains the transfers. Annual totals are appropriate only when you meet the instructions’ conditions for using them. Otherwise, work month by month. If you have several statements, include each policy without counting any coverage twice.
Column B isn’t a record of what you paid. It shows the second-lowest-cost Silver plan premium used to calculate your credit, which may differ from your chosen plan’s premium. The coverage statement supplies figures; you need the reconciliation form.
Blank Column B entries don’t automatically rule out a credit. You may need to determine the applicable benchmark after an unreported move or household change. The HealthCare.gov tax tool can help you find that amount for supported coverage years.
Wrong coverage months or covered people require a Marketplace correction. Have the Marketplace check Form 1095-A for enrollment errors. The tax tool can provide the Silver plan benchmark premium.
Sigue las 2025 IRS instructions for the sequence below. Your software may generate Form 8962 from your entries. Incorrect Marketplace entries still need correcting.
The credit you qualify for may be higher than the advance payments sent to your insurer. Form 8962 calculates any remaining credit or excess payments. Equal amounts need no adjustment.
| Comparación | Resultado | Possible return effect |
|---|---|---|
| Credit exceeds advance payments | Additional credit | Larger refund or smaller balance due |
| Amounts match | No difference to reconcile | No adjustment from reconciliation |
| Advance payments exceed credit | Excess advance payments | Smaller refund or larger balance due |
For 2025 coverage, a repayment cap may limit how much of the excess you must repay, depending on your circumstances. The excess itself isn’t always the amount added to your tax. Those caps no longer apply for 2026 coverage; the general rule requires full repayment of excess advance payments. The IRS reconciliation FAQs explain these differences.
Suppose your credit is $5,000 and your insurer received $4,200 in advance payments. This illustration assumes you meet every eligibility condition. That leaves $800 in additional credit. It doesn’t mean your final refund will be $800: the rest of your return still determines whether you receive a refund or owe a balance.
For 2026 coverage, the temporary expansion of credit eligibility above 400% of the federal poverty line has ended and repayment caps no longer apply. Filing a 2025 return during 2026 doesn’t put that return under the new rules.
| Rule | 2025 coverage tax year | 2026 coverage tax year |
|---|---|---|
| Income above 400% of the federal poverty line | Credit may be available if otherwise eligible | Generally no credit |
| Excess advance payment repayment caps | May limit repayment | No cap |
| Instructions to use | 2025 instructions | 2026 instructions when finalized |
El IRS PTC eligibility guidance explains the income limit. Being within that limit doesn’t automatically qualify you. The other eligibility conditions still apply.
Repayment is a separate calculation. Under the IRS repayment change, you generally must repay the full excess for 2026, even if your income would have qualified you for a repayment cap under the old rules. If you qualify for no credit, that excess can include all advance payments.
Use Form 8962 for the coverage tax year shown on your records. The 2025 line numbers discussed above shouldn’t substitute for final 2026 instructions.
One insurance policy can cover people who belong on different tax returns. After a divorce or a change in who claims a dependent, you may need to divide the policy’s premiums and advance payments between tax households. Part IV of Form 8962 handles these allocations. Don’t assume all the amounts belong on your return just because your name appears on Form 1095-A.
Marriage can require a different calculation. Part V provides an alternative calculation for certain taxpayers who married during the year. Married taxpayers generally must file jointly to claim the credit, though limited exceptions cover certain spouses living apart and victims of domestic abuse or spousal abandonment. The self-employed health insurance deduction can also affect the credit calculation, and the credit can affect that deduction. Follow the IRS special-case guidance for the rules that apply.
Check Form 8962 against your return and every applicable Marketplace statement before you submit it.
Enrollment errors need a Marketplace correction. Don’t substitute figures you think the statement should show.
Code F8962-070 means the IRS expected Form 8962 because its records show advance credit payments for your tax family. Your electronic return didn’t contain it. The IRS rejection instructions provide correction options, depending on whether those records are correct.
You’ll need the coverage year’s Form 1095-A to supply the missing insurance figures. Check that statement, complete the reconciliation in your software, and send the return again with the form attached, following software and IRS instructions. Attaching an incomplete or incorrect form may leave the issue unresolved.
Confirm enrollment and advance payments with the Marketplace. If it confirms no advance payments for anyone in your tax family and you believe reconciliation isn’t required, explain that in a PDF attachment titled “ACA Explanation.” Your software provider’s instructions explain how to attach it. Include Marketplace evidence, such as a corrected or voided coverage statement. An explanation cannot replace a reconciliation you’re required to file.
If you received Letter 12C, the IRS has already accepted your return. Send what the letter asks for by its deadline. The Marketplace statement guidance covers these requests. You can use IRS notice review services for unresolved correspondence.
Many programs generate Form 8962 from your Form 1095-A entries. Check the coverage statement first. Software can’t tell whether the Marketplace reported your circumstances correctly.
Use monthly calculations for the months you had coverage. You can’t use the annual calculation simply because the statement includes an annual total.
Yes, if you qualify. Paying full premiums for Marketplace coverage without savings doesn’t prevent you from claiming a credit on your return, but eligibility isn’t automatic.
An affordable employer offer providing minimum value may prevent a credit, even if you chose Marketplace insurance. Form 1095-C and employer coverage concern that offer; the employer statement doesn’t replace Form 1095-A.
A correct advance payment total won’t fix a wrong coverage month or tax-family member. Have every applicable Form 1095-A beside your federal return when checking Form 8962. Match the coverage year and the people listed, then check each month’s reported coverage. Use a corrected statement in place of the version it replaces, and leave voided statements out of the calculation. Confirm the Column B benchmark, then check the final credit against total advance payments.
Any meaningful discrepancy needs resolving before filing. When records conflict, a policy covers people on different returns, or an IRS question remains open, document review through individual tax preparation services may help you work out what needs correcting.
